Valerie's Story...
Valerie is an 8 year old little girl from the Island of
Cozumel in Mexico. She was identified on March 16,2006
during a child find mission with Carrie's Heart, Angel
Notion and a local governmental social services agency.
Valerie has severe cerebral palsy, is nonverbal and was
extremely malnourished due to the inability to take in
sufficient nutrients orally. Valerie's condition was
compounded by poverty and lack of sufficient medical
care, resources and support locally.

Valerie and her mother arrived in Houston in May, 2006
to begin her medical treatment and recovery.
Our goal for Valerie was to receive the medical care
needed to intake vital nutrients and to improve the quality
of her life. Our goal for Valerie's mother was that she
would have the opportunity to learn from the medical
professionals, therapists and parents of children with
disabilities who would be working with her and Valerie.
We offered them a community of love and support - here
in Houston and we plan to continue our support on an
ongoing basis. Beyond medical care we are dedicated to
improving the home environment for Valerie and supporting
the family in her long term care needs.

The broader goal of The Valerie Project is to provide a
network of support for families of children with
disabilities - including education, resources, and access to
medical care - all in their local communities and provided
by local professionals, parents, and volunteers.

The goal of the Valerie Project is to aid families of children with
severe physical and intellectual disabilities in the care of their
children. The project has identified nine families with 12 children
on the island of Cozumel, Mexico who meet the disability criteria
and are living at or below the poverty level. We are beginning
with sponsoring the care of the three children who are most in
need medically and financially: Valeria Valencia Tello (8 years
old), Juan Diego Ayala Tum (15 years old) and Gladys Carrera
Conde (11 years old). Our short term goal is to sponsor the base
medical, nutritional and personal care needs of these three
children so that they can live a life of dignity, without suffering
from malnutrition and lack of medical care. Our long term goal is
to work in cooperation with local governmental and nonprofit
agencies to understand the needs of the children and how to meet
those needs locally through providing families with resources,
medical services, education, therapies and support groups to
assist them in caring for their children.
