During daily observations at Centro de Atencion Multiple (CAM) in Playa del Carmen I had the opportunity to develop relationships with students and staff that will lead to the creation of future projects at the school. I had the opportunity to work in each of the classrooms with the teachers and students - learning about the individual needs of the students and the programming at each grade level. Donations of teaching materials were made for each classroom. These donations were possible thanks to the generosity and hard work of Carrie's Heart volunteer & supporter Sharyl Groves. Sharyl Groves has years of experience working with children with special needs in the public school system and in hippo therapy programs. In preparation for the Yucatan 2006 project Sharyl purchased supplies & prepared materials for each of the classrooms at Centro de Atencion Multiple. The teachers at CAM were very interested in seeing how Sharyl used everyday objects and materials to create manipulative tasks and activities. The use of these materials is important in showing teachers how to use the resources available to them to improve their instruction! A heartfelt thank you to Sharyl! As part of my Fund for Teachers Grant experience, I documented my experiences during the Yucatan Project on the Carrie's Heart Blog. The entries & great pictures can be found under the July 2006 archives!

Returning to the Yucatan along with Valerie and her mother allowed Carrie's Heart to work in cooperation with Angel Notion on the continuation of Valerie's care upon her return home. Plans were put into place for improvements to the home environment necessary for Valerie and continuity of care working with local medical professionals and social service agencies. Plans were begun for expansion of the Valerie Project to include the ongoing care of Valerie and children like Valerie on the island of Cozumel. For details and pictures of Valerie's journey and The Valerie Project follow the links below: The Valerie Project The Valerie Project Sponsorship Program Carrie's Heart Blog Blog entries about Valerie can be read chronologically beginning with the March 2006 archives through the present!

Child Find Missions
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Carrie's Heart in cooperation with a local non-profit organization (Angel Notion) and a local governmental social services agency (DIF - Desarrollo Integral de la Familia) continued Child Find Missions into local communities on the island of Cozumel. Mission participants included Carrie Conn of Carrie's Heart, Rosy Pirez of Angel Notion, Daly Negron de Ortega (DIF President) and Sra. Meche (DIF Caseworker). During the mission donations of nutritional supplement & diapers were brought into three families that were determined to be most in need from the original families visited. Additional families were also visited to assess their needs. The level of need on the island is great and the organizations involved in child find missions are developing plans to work together to coordinate resources and access to care for the children. Carrie's Heart thanks Rosy Pirez and Daly Negron de Ortega for the compassion that they show for the children of the island. We feel that working together we can work to make great change in the lives of these precious children. For information on how you can get help the children of the island of Cozumel read about the Valerie Project at the links below: The Valerie Project The Valerie Project Sponsorship Program
