HEART ART
During a visit to Centro de Atencion Multiple in Playa del Carmen, students participated in a
Carrie's Heart art project called "Heart Art".  Carrie's Heart provided each classroom with
donations of all of the fun art supplies used for the project - glue, scissors, paints, crayons,
markers, colored paper, stickers, glitter and more!  The kids had a great time and created
some really neat art!  Artwork will be used to create products  for future fundraising projects
for the school!   Check out the pics of all of the fun!
WALKER EXCHANGE PROGRAM
During the March trip to the Yucatan we were able to bring down five juvenile walkers to be
used with additional walkers we have brought into the region to begin a Walker Exchange
Program at CAM in Playa.  During the project all of the students at CAM who needed walkers
were able to be fitted with a walker.  Up until this point the students had to share the only
walker available at the school during the school day.  This walker was also checked out to
parents to be used at home periodically.  This situation was very limiting for these young
students who are just developing the ability to walk with assistance. Older students have had to
rely on others to walk them from place to place instead of being able to move independently. An
important aspect of the Walker Exchange Program is that parents have agreed to return
walkers to the school as their child grows out of them so that their is an ongoing supply of
walkers available to students.  A very rewarding project seeing children walking on their own!
A HUGE THANKS TO THE NOEL & SCOTT FAMILIES
FOR THE DONATION OF THEIR WALKERS!

During the Spring Yucatan trip we made our first visit to the CAM school on the island of
Cozumel.  This is the smallest CAM school that I have visited thus far.  However, it appears
as though there are a number of dedicated teachers at the school.  We were given a tour of
the school visiting each classroom and meeting the students and staff.  We donated a nice
supply of school supplies to the school and a stack of wonderful children's literature books in
Spanish for their school library.  We hope to visit the school again soon!
"The most severe disability IS NOT being
unable to see, to hear or to walk...but
instead the attitude of the people that
surround me."
During the Spring Yucatan trip we had the opportunity to perform our first child find mission
on the island of Cozumel. Visiting special education schools throughout the Yucatan region it was
concerning to see that children with more involved physical, intellectual and behavioral disabilities
are not being served in the public school system. During our visit to the island of Cozumel, we
were afforded the opportunity to begin child find missions into the local community to visit with
families of children with severe disabilities in their homes. On March 16th, 2006 we visited nine
families with a total of 12 children.  We found that a number of the families were doing a
really great job of caring for their children in very challenging circumstances and with little
resources available to them.  We also encountered children whose medical issues and home
environments were of great concern to us.  One of those children named Valerie was in need of
immediate medical assistance.  Please take the time to read about Valerie and the other
children involved in the
Valerie Project.  Carrie's Heart plans to continue child find missions and
providing support to family in their homes through the Valerie Project.  There is great need in
the region & beyond.  We hope to begin to help child by child...one child at a time.  Please join
us in this important work...we need your help!

March, 2006
During a week long Spring Break trip to Yucatan during March 2006 visits were made to two
Centro de Atencion Multiple Schools in the Yucatan region.  In addition, Carrie's Heart
participated in it's first child find mission on the island of Cozumel in cooperation with Angel
Notion (a local nonprofit organization) and a local governmental social services agency named
DIF (Desarrollo Integral de la Familia).

Teaching by Example!
While observing in the schools I try to teach by example rather than coming in as an "expert".
I try to build relationships with the students and teachers so that they will be open to my
ideas.  A great example is the spontaneous lesson created around putting together the walkers
in the photos above.  A great experience working with the students - especially with Gonzolo
who is visually impaired.  We had a great time working together on putting the legs on in the
right holes, in the right direction etc.  A great way for him to use his hands & mind!  As a
reward for their help I took the class to get a soda.  Again...teaching by example.  The
students along with their teacher & I went to the corner store to buy sodas.  Rather than
buying the sodas for the students we turned it into a mini community instruction trip.  I gave
each student some loose change and they picked out a soda and paid for it one their own!  I
feel that as I work with each school and develop relationships with the staff I will be able to
continue to demonstrate ways that they can use the resources already available to them to
expand their programming and real life experiences for their students!
I loved this sign that was in one of the
classrooms at CAM Cozumel...
An inspiring aspect of the
CAM schools that I have
visited is that they hire
former students as teaching
assistants in the schools!
What a great opportunity for
these young adults!
A challenge faced by single mother
and working families is how to care
for their children while they work.
Mirna & Miguel's mother is faced
with this difficult situation and
has to leave her children locked in
the home alone to be able to
provide for her family.
Raymundo's father has gone
to great lengths to engineer
his own adaptive equipment for
his son including a stander /
walker and a cable system
with a bouncing seat.
Inspirational!
